International Children's Digital Library Partners with the Alice M. Jordan Collection at Boston Public Library

Boston, MA (PRWEB) February 25, 2008 -- The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) Foundation (www.childrenslibrary.org), has reached an agreement with the Boston Public Library to provide digital access to hundreds of titles from its world-renowned Alice M. Jordan collection. This agreement contributes significantly to ICDL's goal of creating the world's largest collection of nineteenth/twentieth century children's books freely available on the Internet. The agreement with the Alice M. Jordan Collection is the latest in a growing number of partnerships with libraries and collections throughout the world. Through these agreements, the ICDL is making quality, local language literature accessible to children and to children's literature scholars throughout the world.

The recently released collection includes such well-loved titles as Robinson Crusoe, Cock Robin, Little Red Riding Hood and the Children in the Wood, as well as a remarkable group of cautionary tales, religious and moral stories and instruction, natural history, rhymes, and stories of amusement and riddles. Almost 100 editions of Mother Goose rhymes, as well as nineteenth/twentieth century editions of Aesop's fables, Grimm's fairy tales, and Hans Christian Andersen's stories are among the treasures in the collection.

"Our partnership with the Boston Public Library gives the ICDL an opportunity to partner with an American icon," said Tim Browne, Executive Director for the International Children's Digital Library. "Boston Public Library has a legacy as a pioneer. It was the first free municipal library in the world; it was the first public library to establish a space especially for children; and today it is the largest public research library in New England. Together, we have made it possible for children worldwide to have access to some of the first modern examples of children's literature, in books which are full of life lessons, all delivered by classic characters to whom children can relate."

According to Maura Marx, (BPL's Manager of Digital Services), "We are pleased to be working with the International Children's Digital Library to create awareness and appreciation for this period of children's literature. The ICDL's state-of-the-art technology has made it possible for the Boston Public Library to provide access for children and scholars from the world over to this unique and classic collection."

The International Children's Digital Library (ICDL) Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting cultural understanding and tolerance by presenting the best of children's literature to children throughout the world. By making its extensive collection of books available online, it aspires to reach children, parents and educators who have limited access to libraries. The ICDL today has online more than 2400 exemplary titles of its 5,000 books master collection, representing 56 countries and 42 languages with visitors from over 150 countires.
