Boston Symphony Orchestra Announces 2007 Tanglewood Jazz Festival Lineup

(Billboard Publicity Wire) June 13, 2007 -- The Boston Symphony Orchestra has announced the addition of Kevin Mahogany's Kansas City Revue featuring the music of Big Joe Turner, BossaBrasil featuring the Cesar Camargo Mariano and Romero Lubambo Duo, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and Hugh Masekela to the 2007 Tanglewood Jazz Festival line-up.

South African trumpeter, Hugh Masekela, will perform immediately following the Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band on Friday, August 31, at 8 pm. Best known for his chart-topping 1968 hit, "Grazin' in the Grass," Masekela continues to demonstrate extraordinary growth and versatility in his music. A lifelong activist and supporter of anti apartheid leader, Nelson Mandela, Masekela also founded a music school and record label to benefit South African youth. He toured with Paul Simon's "Graceland," and recorded with Bob Marley, Miriam Makeba, Abdullah Ibrahim and dozens of other South African artists.

Kevin Mahogany appeared as Big Joe Turner in the Robert Altman film, Kansas City. His resemblance to Turner, a popular blues singer from the 1930's-60's -- both in style and appearance--introduces a new generation of music fans to such blues and R & B hits as "Chain of Love," "The Chill is On," and "Shake, Rattle and Roll." Mahogany's own jazz pedigree qualifies him as one of the genre's leading vocalists. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and countless venues around the world, and records on his own label, Mahogany Jazz.

Appearing with Kevin Mahogany in the Kansas City Revue will be saxophonist Red Holloway, who performed on Big Joe Turner's last recording, "Tata Tata," and was a close personal friend of the singer. Pianist Cyrus Chestnut, who portrayed Pete Johnson in the Altman film, will also be onstage. Vocalist Kathy Kosins will join the revue along with the Chuck Bergeron Trio.

Kevin Mahogany's Kansas City Revue featuring the Music of Big Joe Turner will perform Sunday, September 2, at 1:30 pm.

BossaBrasil premiered at Birdland in New York in 2005 and features pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano and guitarist Romero Lubambo. Mariano is recipient of a Latin "Grammy" Lifetime Achievement Award for legendary status in the world of Brazilian pop music. Romero has performed and recorded with Jobim, Gilberto Gill, Diane Reeves, Yo-Yo Ma, and Paquito D'Rivera among others. Brazilian samba-jazz vocalist, Leny Andrade, will appear as the duo's guest. BossaBrasil was created by Pat Phillips and Ettore Stratta.

BossaBrasil will perform immediately following Kevin Mahogany's Kansas City Revue on Sunday, September 2, at 1:30 pm.

Maria Schneider arrived in New York from Minnesota in 1985, studied composition with Bob Brookmeyer and became an assistant to Gil Evans working on the film, The Color of Money, and on the Gil Evans and Sting tour in 1987. The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra was awarded a 2005 Grammy for its recording "Concert in the Garden" (ArtistShare Records) and became the first Grammy winning recording with internet only sales. Numerous Grammy nominations were received for her previous recordings, Evanescence, Coming About and Allegresse. Allegresse was included in the Top Ten Recordings of 2000 by Time magazine and Billboard. Schneider's latest CD, Sky Blue is scheduled for release from ArtistShare in June 2007.

The Maria Schneider Orchestra will perform immediately following BossaBrasil on Sunday, September 2.
